 About the Author

At thirteen, Julie dedicated her life to Christ.  As a religion major at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, she received the American Bible Society’s Religion Major of the Year Award. She then studied for three semesters in seminary. She is a member of Advanced Writers & Speakers Association, American Christian Fiction Writers, North Texas Christian Writers, American Christian Fiction Writers, DiAnn Mill’s Ripplers Group, The Christians Writers Group, and Christian Writers Fellowship International. A freelance writer and speaker, Julie has published hundreds of web content and articles with secular and Christian themes, led retreats, workshops, and Bible studies, and writes regularly for several Christian websites and publications. In the past three years alone, she has been published in Devozine and Alive Now Magazines published by the Upper Room, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Find Your Happiness to be released October 2011, Good News Daily, The Secret Place, Light from the Word, and has been commissioned to write a month long commentary on Philippians and Colossians for The Journey.

How did you become a Christian writer? When my husband was alive, we moved a lot for his job - so much that I soon became unemployable. We relocated to seven cities during the last ten years of his life. In one week, three people in three states suggested I try writing for a living. I figured that was a God thing because He always has to tell me more than once. I took a quick online freelance course, joined a writers' group, and began to submit articles. Within a few weeks I had contracts. So, I promised God I would tithe my writing day each morning to Him first. He has honored that. I write regularly for two Christian women's websites and have been published in the past three years in two Upper Room magazines, Chicken Soup for the Soul, The Secret Place, Good News Daily and The Journey, amongst others. I am also eking out a living as a freelance writer, author and public speaker even though I am now widowed.

What is your passion? Speaking to Christian women - leading workshops and retreats. All four of my non-fiction books came out of retreats I led. They are -

P.R.A.Y.I.N.G:Bringing Power and Purpose to Your Prayers in which I show how each letter is a form of prayer.

What Can She Tell Us?- A Bible study on the unnamed women in the New Testament.

Song Notes- a collection of devotionals on the Psalms.

Between the Window and the Door, a study which looks at why God places us in the in-between times through both life experiences and Biblical examples.

What is your fiction novel called? Focused. It was released earlier this year.

What is it about? Jen is in middle age maliase. Her parents have passed, her son has flown nest, and her husband, Jeff, is often absent, even when he is in his beloved recliner. Will her new trifocals help her focus on her faith and her fidelity once her newly divorced high school beau resurfaces in her life?

What do you hope this book accomplishes? I read a statistic that claimed if a marriage survives the first seven years, 80% of divorces will occur within a year after the death of a parent or the children leaving home. I wanted to address this, but in a fiction format so people could follow both Jeff and Christina's story. I hope readers will begin to see why a marriage gone stale is worth fighting for. Even if you have a good marriage or are not currently married, it will make you smile, and perhaps cry a bit. It is a heart warming, and at times an honest and humorous, look at real people in real life. So far, the women, and a few men, who have read it says it is a very good, realistic read without being preachy. 

Any tips for upcoming authors? No pun intended, but stay focused on what God is calling you to write. Also, be patient in His timing and definition of what will be your success. 

Continue to grow in your craft by graciously accepting positive critiques from authors who have been published as well as attending conferences, workshops, and becoming an active member in mentoring groups either online or over someone's dining room table. 

If you feel this is your passion and God's calling, do not give up. In the course of writing over the past four years, I lost my husband and lost the use of my right hand. Praise God, through surgery, I can now type with three fingers on that hand again, though often my letters get jumbled up because I cannot feel the keys.

Where are you from? 

I am from a small community in South Carolina called Little Africa that was founded by freed slaves in the 1800’s

What was your inspiration for writing name of book? 

I decided to write “The Monday Night Mistress” after seeing so many stories in the media about incestuous relationships. Prayerfully, writing about it will create a dialogue and bring healing. 

What other books have you authored? Tell us about them.

Do you use an outline or do you let your story unfold naturally? 

A little of both. When an idea pops into my head, I write a quick synopsis and use it as a guideline to let the story unfold.

  

From your experience, what key ingredients do new writers need to succeed in the book industry? 

Continue to hone your craft. You have to invest time and research your topics in order to write a believable story. Also, develop a thick skin. Rejection comes with the territory.

Besides writing, what else do you like to do? 

I love to travel, cook, and explore other cultures

Welcome Shon to the Spotlight.  

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am a Husband of ten years, Father, Mentor and Owner of Never Again Ministries which promote Marriage Enhancement and Holistic Relationships. My Wife and I host the Doctor of Love Show on Three different stations.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? In my latest book WISDOM: 

Preventing Problems before They Happen the overall message is to help people cut back on making bad decisions. Don’t get me wrong, we all make mistakes but if there is someone who can mentor us from making bad decisions, apply the wisdom that others give to you.

What is the most challenging part of being an indie author? What is the most rewarding part of being an indie author? The most challenging part of being an indie author is getting others to see the vision that is birthed within you. When you don’t have others backing you or you don’t have the big name to match, it takes more time for others to buy into what you are writing.

What made you decide to become an author? I like to talk a lot! I figured if I can put all my thoughts and ideas on paper it will become more valuable to those who read my books.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? I started writing my first book If You Apply These Principles in 2008. Then I went on to get published by the company Lulu.

Please tell us the titles of your current book (s): And give a brief synopsis 

-If You Apply These Principles: God Is More Practical Than We Think (2008) I used a lot of Bible Scripture from the book of Proverbs on the practicality of God and how God require work to be done on our behalf to be successful. 

-It’s The Woman You Gave Me (2009) how we can get past blaming others for past hurts and disappointments from parents, friends, spouses, and situations. Notice how the blame game started with Adam and Eve in the garden. Since the beginning of time it’s been an issue even until today

-3 Are Even Better (2010) eight week workbook for married couples and benefits of God being the head of your marriage. The title came from the book of Ecclesiates 4:12 we discuss topics from money, sex, how to affair proof your marriage to blended families

-WISDOM: Preventing Problems before they happen (2012) Refer back to question number one for synopsis

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Don’t quit when things get tough and get connected to others who have the same goals as you. Networking with other authors is a powerful tool. Also support other authors and understand it’s not always about you and your work.

Tell us about your journey to publication for me it was tough because I didn’t know any other published authors when I wrote my first book. I just did the best I could and let the cards fall. But as time went on publishing became easier.

What next for you we are hosting our first “3 are even better” Marriage Retreat in Payson, Arizona this fall and the release of my new book WISDOM: Preventing problems before they happen

Where did you get the inspiration to write Invisible Enemies Book One of the Invisible Enemies Series?

Lynda D. Brown: I was really into the whole New Age movement when it started in the ‘70’s. I started off innocently enough by reading my daily horoscope in the newspaper. That grew into an obsession with astrology.

By the time I was 25, I had a thriving side business creating horoscope charts for clients, doing tarot card readings, and clients booking me to do psychic parties. I had a nice size clientele.

In 2003, a co-worker overhead me talking about a reading I had conducted earlier that day, and she asked me if I realized I was practicing witchcraft. I scoffed at her and told her that I wasn’t practicing black magic, but white magic! The next day, this same co-worker bought me two books; He Came to Set the Captives Free by Rebecca Brown and Pigs in a Parlor, by Ida and Frank Hammond. Both books dealt with spiritual warfare, and showed me biblical text about the dangers of witchcraft and fortune-telling.

I grew up as a Christian and never heard about spiritual warfare in my Baptist church. When I finished the books, I immediately threw my cards away and promised God that I would share this new-found knowledge with others in the form of a fictional book series. That’s how Invisible Enemies was born.

What sets Invisible Enemies Book One of the Invisible Enemies Series apart from other books in the same genre?

LDB: My books have been described as either supernatural thriller or speculative fiction due to the angelic and demonic characters. Diversity is another factor with my series. I have African-Americans, Caucasians, Latinos, Wiccan’s and Lesbians as main characters. Fans of Christian fiction really like my work because it’s not often they read about a church secretary whose really a shape shifting demon that manifests during a church meeting!

As an author, what are the keys to your success that led to Invisible Enemies Book One of the Invisible Enemies Series getting out to the public?

LDB: Social media! I have a Facebook Fan Page for Invisible Enemies. I have a Twitter account where I have automatic tweets set up to promote my books. I am involved with the writing groups on LinkedIn, where many first time authors or self published authors were experiencing difficulties promoting their books. With that need in mind, I started Author Chat, a blogtalkradio show, where I interview authors about their books. I also set up a sister website for authors to join, called http://www.authorchat.info.

As an author, what is your writing process? How long did it take you to start and finish Invisible Enemies Book One of the Invisible Enemies Series?

LDB: It took me about two years and eleven months to finish Invisible Enemies. I started out writing a couple of chapters a day, and then I’d go back and proofread what I had written. It really dragged out the process.

Luckily, I ran into a literary agent who told me to stop proofreading and just write the book. I took his advice and finished the book. The sequel, Seed of Satan: Leah’s Story, only took eight months to finish because I took the literary agent’s advice.

What’s next for Lynda D. Brown?

LDB: I’m currently working on book three of the series. My Author Chat radio show is currently booking authors for May-December 2012, and I’m also planning to publish a short story book under the Spoken Word Press label in 2012.

Ashley, The Spotlight Is On You! Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m 26 years old, an author, and CEO of Blessedfyi.com (Blessed.Faith.Youth.Inspiration).  Most of all, I’m a child of God!  I’m a firm believer in Jesus Christ and this why I have dedicated my career towards Him; and I’m hoping to share the Gospel to others.  

What are some of you major accomplishments?

In December 2010, I started blessedfyi.com, and I must say that was one major accomplishment I’m very proud of.   After starting my magazine that following year, I was blessed to publish two books.  My first book is entitled Strong Little Praying Hands - Christian Prayer Book for Youth.  It has twelve prayers for youth and twelve related Bible verses.  My second book is entitled Strong Praying Hands - Christian Prayer Book for Everyone. 

First, tell us your vision and mission for the magazine. 

How did the idea come for launching the magazine?

Blessedfyi.com is an online Christian magazine with youth writers who spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all Christians.  My youth writers have so much to say about Jesus, and I feel this why we have thousands of readers all over the world.  Blessedfyi.com is a Christian website where everyone can praise and learn the Word of God.  Not only does it encourage our readers, but it also allows readers to stay up-to-date with the latest Christian news, music, books, and much more.  

What was the inspiration (motivation) behind the book? (Why did you write the book?) 

As a preschool teacher, I learned that many children had no idea about praying. Some also had no idea about Jesus Christ.  I feel that everyone should not only know about Jesus, but also praise and worship His name. I’m a firm believer that Christ is the only way we are able to wake up and live each day. He is the only One that makes all things possible in our lives.  

After I wrote Strong Little Praying Hands, parents were asking me if I have a prayer book for them. I decided to write Strong Praying Hands-Christian Prayer Book for Everyone.  This book contains prayers and their related Bible verses as well.  I also included discussion topics with the prayers that may affect us every day.  Some of the topics discussed are gossip, friendship, giving your entire heart to Jesus, and much more!

What do you hope this book accomplishes? 

After reading my book, I hope that readers understand the importance of praying.  Prayer not only allows us to communicate with God, but gives us faith each day that God will bless us with whatever we need in our lives.  We can come to Him any time, any day, as ourselves and He is always there to listen. 

Who (or what) is your greatest encourager when you write and why? 

My greatest encourager when I write is God, of course. He gives me the inspiration to write and put it in the books.  My parents are my number one fans and have encouraged me so much. My parents instilled in me at a young age the importance of believing and following Christ.

Upcoming Events?

I have been invited to do book readings and signings at many Christian events and schools.  I’m scheduled to have some book readings and signings next month as well. Strong Little Praying Hands will also be on display at the New Jersey book show case this June and the New York book show case this October.  

Any tips for upcoming authors? 

It’s important to have faith and stay consistent in whatever you do.  In this day of time, there are so many publishing tools available.  Self-publishing companies such as lulu.com make it so easy to get your book published in many formats.

My name is Sherrell Valdezloqui, Im 27 years old. I am an Author and the CEO of Promoting Purpose Magazine. I am a very compassionate person that loves to encourage, inspire and motivate others through my expertise in Spiritual Writing. I am rapidly increasing in spiritual knowledge and is always allowing God to use me as a vessel; delivering an on-time message through social media, religious publishing and more.

That’s kind of hard to say but I would have to say Promoting Purpose Magazine!





What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today?

Patience! At one time I wanted things to happen at a finger snap. I became aggravated because I knew I had the potential to grow in all areas of my life but I had to understand maturity takes time. This was in the areas of business, my ministry /spiritual life and etc…

What woman inspires you most and why?

My mom Carol L. Grayson, because she has pushed me and have always told me I would go beyond just being ordinary. Even when it looked to me I couldn't do it she always told me to at least try.


What is your favorite inspirational quote or Bible verse?

"And He said What may be impossible with Men is Possible with God".

Can you offer tips to those who want to launch a magazine?

Ensure that this is something you really want to do, pray and seek God because magazines take up a lot of time it’s like a baby needs all of your attention lol. Do your research and ensure your patience level is high enough, there may be times when you ask yourself is this the right thing for you to do because you may not reap the financial rewards you are looking for if you are in it for money right away. My motivation for holding on is the fact that God spoke to me clearly telling me to start this publication for his people. So therefore I’m doing it as a servant for God and not the finances.

If you’re a spiritual person my tip is to pray about it and ensure it is part of your assignment the last thing you want to do is to jump on a path that’s not yours. If you’re not really spiritual then I would say research and ensure your heart is in it. Goggle any questions you may have about starting a magazine they have some good tips as well.


What is your mission and purpose in life?

To be a vessel for the Lord and speak the things in which he tells me to speak to the mass. As well as push Men and Women of God to seek their purpose and understand it is never too late to start working on your dreams. It’s only late when you take your dreams to the grave never trying…..

What’s next for you? I’ve actually been called to start walking in my calling as a Woman of God teaching and ministering on the pulpit. I’m also about to start a campaign launch for my next book which talks about my life as a CEO at the age of 25. It will discuss the things I’ve been through as a single mom, my gifts of seeing disasters before it happens as God had warned Noah and Moses before things occurred, all the way down to running from God and my calling and etc. The title is called Sherrell Valdezloqui the face behind Promoting Purpose

I understand you are also an author. Tell us about your journey to publication? My first book, Poems of Prayers, was written while I was 17, but was not published until the age of 21. The Lord then directed me to write a book that would show a mirrored image of those who were hurting due to the relationship they were in. Specifically, I spoke of the hurt one may occur when in an abusive marriage. The woman that lusted for men based on their appearances happened only because of a dark past she experienced since childhood. Most of my writing are mirror image of the possible life someone is going through and showing them there situation for them to pray and seek guidance.
